THE OLD-TIMEY AVANT-GARDE SERIES featuring THE MOLECULES - KORYBANTES - RED OKRA KING - KONK PACK - NIEF-NORF PROJECT - THE HOME OF EASY CREDIT
Taking its name from the paradoxical description of The Shaking Ray Levis performing group, The Old-Timey Avant-Garde Series in the month of October aims to hold fast to the band’s tradition of breaking traditions. Centering on a birthday celebration for the late Dennis Palmer, co-founder of both the band The Shaking Ray Levis and the non-profit arts education organization The Shaking Ray Levi Society, the series will feature a mind-bogglingly wide variety of astounding, ear-and-mind-opening sounds from both the improvised and composed music realms, by some of the most fascinating and acclaimed performers in the world today.
THE MOLECULES, KORYBANTES, RED OKRA KING (Thurs. Oct. 3, 9 pm, $10) Formed in 1990, the Bay Area trio The Molecules built a reputation for its frenetic, no-holds-barred live performances and unclassifiable, unique rock amalgam that stretches the limits of punk, noise, prog-rock and more, featuring front man guitarist/vocalist Ron Anderson who was a founding member of the legendary no-wave/noise band Rat At Rat R in the early ‘80s. Opening the show will be the brand new free-improv trio Korybantes featuring bassist Evan Lipson (Normal Love), drummer Bob Stagner (Shaking Ray Levis) and Rick Weaver (Dinner Music), and the world’s foremost expert on gnome mythology, Red Okra King.
DENNIS PALMER BIRTHDAY WEEKEND: OCTOBER 11-13KONK PACK (Fri., Oct. 11, 8 pm, $10): Described by The Wire magazine as “One of the most exciting improv groups in the world,” Konk Pack brings together three major figures in contemporary music. On lap steel and clarinet, Tim Hodgkinson (London) is a composer, ethnomusicologist and co-founder of the art-rock group Henry Cow. Thomas Lehn (Cologne, Germany) plays exclusively on vintage analog synthesizers in numerous international ensembles. Roger Turner (London) is one of the most innovative improvising percussionists of the last four decades and has performed with artists such as Cecil Taylor, Annette Peacock and Evan Parker.NIEF-NORF PROJECT (Sat., Oct. 12, 8 pm, $10): nief-norf is a contemporary music ensemble devoted to performing, studying and commissioning imaginative and challenging musical works. Utilizing a flexible roster of musicians, nief-norf performs works from both the historical and emerging avant-garde, and shares their commitment to this music through creative programming concepts, educational initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaboration. www.niefnorf.orgDENNIS PALMER DATE NIGHT MOVIES (Sun., Oct. 13, 8 pm, free): Dennis Palmer’s longtime friend and Outside Pleasures radio show collaborator Tom Landis presents an evening of classic experimental cinema, free and open to the public. THE HOME OF EASY CREDIT (Sat., Oct. 19, 8 pm, $10) Danish multi-instrumentalist Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen and bassist Tom Blancarte comprise the Queens-based duo The Home of Easy Credit, challenging the boundaries of free-improvised music, jazz, folk and pop music, and creating a dark, beautiful and thrilling sound world with apocalyptic musical narratives. “…gorgeous, eerie, and unsettling.
