"Don't Stand in Front of the Microwave" and Other Things My Mother Told Me

Charlene Hong White's "Don't Stand in Front of the Microwave" and Other Things My Mother Told Me is a semi-autobiographical, one-act play based on the experience of growing up as an Asian-American woman in white suburbia. Perhaps a tad Shakespearean influenced, the one-act play features both traditional dialogue between characters as well as extended sections of reflective poetic asides to the audience.

Charlene Hong White is the first-generation American daughter of Taiwanese immigrants and a career-changer into the performing arts. She is a graduate of the Professional Actor Training Program with Rex Knowles and Sherry Landrum as well as a recent acting student of Dr. Anne Swedberg's at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Her writing voice is greatly impacted by her time as an undergraduate at Harvard University studying British history and literature and as a seminarian studying theology and mental health counseling. When not rehearsing for a show, Charlene enjoys thrifting and restoring vintage wear, drinking bubble tea, and playing board games with family and friends.
