George Schuller is drummer with the Lee Konitz Quartet and son of famed composer and jazz
advocate Gunther Schuller. He has also played with jazz greats Mose Allison and Joe Lovano. This very special Legends of Jazz performance pays homage to the music of John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet and clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre. The show ties in with a major symposium being held at the University of the South in Sewanee focusing on the MJQ and its music. A special attraction of the symposium will be a viewing of Music Inn, hosted by George Schuller, who co-produced the film. This documentary conveys the remarkable story of the School of Jazz in Lenox, Massachusetts.
The band assembled for this performance is stellar:
George Schuller – Drums
Greg Tardy – Clarinet/Saxophone
Mike Baggetta – Guitar
Rusty Holloway – Bass
Don’t miss this not-to-be-repeated homage to jazz legends John Lewis and Jimmy Giuffre!
“Never a bender to trends or rigid ideology, George Schuller plays in the moment and looks to the future. At the same time, he’s aware of the past as something to build on in new ways.” – Hartford Courant
” Schuller is a drummer who starts at the boundaries and then extends them. He can take the music through difficult and surprising changes with astonishing economy.” AllAboutJazz
